Fly from Tijuana Airport
Flying from Tijuana International Airport (General Abelardo L. Rodriguez) is, most of the times, significantly less expensive than flying out of San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field).
Tijuana International Airport is located just two miles West of the Otay Mesa border crossing and about 5 miles East of San Ysidro border crossing.
It is practically right across the border fence line.
The main airlines flying out of Tijuana are Aeromexico, Volaris, Interjet, Viva Aerobus and Aereo Calafia.
The airport operates a five-story parking garage which remains open 24 hours, 7 days a week at about $16 USD a day.
Don’t try to go looking for parking options near the airport because you won’t find any.
You either need to park on the US border side (Otay Mesa, best) or at the airport parking structure.
The best way to get to the airport is through Otay Mesa.
- Otay Mesa is closer to the airport.
- There is a lot less street traffic.
- The customs check point in Otay Mesa is more airport-passenger tolerant.
- Walking back across the border is faster because there is a lot less people crossing on foot at Otay Mesa.
The airport terminal is small. The passenger ascending and descending area gets crowded very fast in peak hours. Just like in any other busy airport.
